Stefanos A. Koumanoudis

Author

Stefanos A. Koumanoudis (Adrianople, 1818 – Athens, 1899). He was the first Greek professor of Latin at the University of Athens and served for many years as the secretary of the Archaeological Society of Athens, providing significant services. He authored works in the fields of epigraphy, antiquity, and Latin, and also carried out numerous translations. His archive contains a preserved diary, speeches, letters, and unpublished notes. Koumanoudis was a scholar who walked hand-in-hand with the development of the modern Greek state. He was particularly concerned with the issue of shaping national identity, a fact reflected in almost every one of his texts. Ideologically, he belongs to the successors of the Greek Enlightenment thinkers and can be considered their last direct representative.
