1946 - Only Hate
Thanasis Petrou continues to explore critical periods of modern Greek history with a new graphic novel.
With the sixth volume of his historical series, Thanasis Petrou continues to seek the larger picture through small, individual stories. The merit of this approach lies in restoring History to the people who actually lived it, without diminishing the political and social forces that shaped their fates. And it serves as a reminder that when a society fails to process its wounds, the past does not simply close a chapter—it becomes the very ground upon which the next one opens.
– Stelios Papagrigoriou, CNN…one of the very few attempts to narrate the Greek Civil War in graphic novel form, even as historical comics have been flourishing in recent years.
– Manos Vasileiou Aronis, Smassing CultureThis is, after all, one of the defining characteristics of his work. Petrou has chosen the graphic novel as a medium for historical narrative. Beyond their visual excellence, his illustrations evoke a period atmosphere, reconstructing spaces and figures while allowing the reader to feel immersed in a society attempting to return to normality without having shed its trauma.
– Dionysis Marinos, Book PressThe narrative power of the work lies in Petrou’s ability to approach historical developments from below, through the eyes of those living through their consequences. Politics ceases to be merely a series of events and dates, becoming an integral part of everyday life. This approach turns the graphic novel into more than a historical depiction; it becomes a social fresco that evokes the genuine reality of the era.
